Research Areas

Dr. H. Uchida’s research interest is on the development of socially efficient marine resource management policy, with particular focus on the possibility and effectiveness of collective self-governance by the local resource users. His particular focus is on institutional designs and rules of the game adopted by such self-governing organizations, and understanding how these affect the incentive structure of resource users and the consequent outcomes. In his recent research he analyzed fishery co-management organizations in Japanese coastal fisheries, both theoretically and quantitatively, utilizing extensive fieldwork and conducting surveys. He continues to work on Japanese fishery co-management with an aim to identify policy implications that are applicable in other places, both developed and developing countries. In addition to fishery co-management, his research interest extends to optimal harvesting of fish when their quality changes over time within a season, the relationship between market power and resource rent, and the provision of public goods.
