Research Areas

Dr. Grigalunas' research focuses on economic valuation applied to coastal and marine resource issues. Recent projects include a series of valuation studies for the Peconic National Estuary Program, assessment of the cost to fisheries due to marine mining, dredging and disposal, and development of an integrated framework for container port decisions. Other research concerns productivity analysis for offshore oil and gas, sustainable financing for managing transboundary marine pollution, and analysis of policies to address coastal eutrophication. Recent publications include papers in Ecological Economics, Growth and Change, International Journal of Maritime Economics, Ocean Policy Research, and Coastal Management. Recent reports include a valuation handbook with case studies for Large Marine Ecosystems, and technical reports on Natural Resource Damage Assessment and on use of benefit-cost analysis for controlling transboundary pollution. Dr. Grigalunas consults widely for governments and industry, has served on four National Research Council Committees and Panels, is Director of the Korea-America Joint Marine Policy Research Center at URI, and is on the editorial board of Ocean Policy Research.
