Apply to be a Pathways For Success in Science Mentor for Fall 2009

What: Work through URI and 4-H clubs to promote science in Providence schools. Involves taking a 3 credit NRS 491 course that meets on Fridays between 3 and 5 pm. Visit a school once a week on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for 8 weeks. Saturday volunteering is also available for 5 weeks.

Study Abroad at the Smithsonian-Institute and George Mason University for Spring 2010

What: “Grounded in natural science, this interdisciplinary semester combines public policy, sociology, conflict resolution and global awareness. Students take five simultaneous courses: meet formally four hours per day, four days a week, in addition to lab sessions, evening lectures and field trips to locations throughout the Washington, DC area. Like a "study abroad" program, this is an academically intense experience, with students in residence at the Smithsonian. Through active learning, teamwork, field and lab work, use of information technology, public communication, and case studies, students will emerge from the “Conservation Semester” prepared for conservation-related professions and/or graduate study related to biodiversity and conservation.”

New Course Offered for Fall 2009

What: AVS/NFS 504 ~ Food Systems, Sustainability, and Health

When: Thursdays, 1 – 4 pm

Course Description: Students in the course will investigate animal and human health and nutrition in the context of various food systems.

Study Abroad/ Internship available at the CIEE Research Station for Fall 2009

When: Aug 22 – Dec 19

Where: CIEE Research Station in Bonaire

What: There are internships available in CIEE Tropical Marine Ecology and Conservation program, which serves as study abroad programs. The internship includes research data collection on coral reefs, 3 courses through CIEE and SCUBA diving support.

Eligibility: Must have a BA /BS in Biology with a focus in Marine Biology, Ecology or Biological Oceanography

What: "Unique training initiative that offers the chance to learn Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing methodologies while becoming a certified SCUBA diver in the context of marine environment management and science."
