Welcome to URI Community Nutrition Education

URI Community Nutrition programming is an outreach component of CELS to bring much-needed nutrition education and resource management skills to families struggling with low income. URI community nutrition education is offered through two distinct programs in core urban areas:

EFNEP, or Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, AND

SNAP-Ed, or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education

Both programs deliver evidence-based curricula to eligible audiences in a wide range of sites throughout the state. Below is a quick comparison of the two programs, with contact information for each. More detailed information about each program can be found using the links at the left.

  EFNEP SNAP-Ed
Primary Audience Families with young children, and youth groups; staff who serve eligible families Families, Youth, and Seniors currently receiving or eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance (food stamps)
How Delivered Taught as a series of 6 or more hands-on lessons Can be a one-time presentation or series of lessons
Primary Settings Schools, churches and community agencies serving target audience; can also be offered as a learn-at-home curriculum Community agencies, school districts, childcare centers, housing sites, senior centers, health centers, parks and recreation departments, farmers markets, food stamp offices
Presenters Taught by trained paraprofessionals indigenous to the community Taught by trained staff and students
Topics Available Nutrition Basics; Stretching the Food Dollar; Healthy Snacks; Feeding Families; Cooking Skills; Food Safety; Physical Activity Same plus additional topics by request
Data Collection Demographics; Pre and post knowledge and behavior assessment Demographics; behavior change evaluation
