Vision:

The Department of Plant Sciences educates students in plant management and entomology, and undertakes applied research and practical outreach directed at enhancing and protecting our environment.

Mission:

Teaching Our Environmental Horticulture and Turfgrass Management curriculum prepares students for many different careers in horticulture and turf management, and provides support to other undergraduate majors, including those preparing for advanced degrees. Our graduate teaching program provides traditional academic training for the degrees of M.S. and Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences with emphasis in entomology, horticulture, plant pathology, and plant science, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches and contemporary research techniques.

Research and Outreach Plant Sciences faculty and staff support research and outreach programs that focus in three areas:

a)      Increasing the sustainability of managed landscapes by developing plants with reduced maintenance requirements and by promoting environmentally-sensitive management methods including pest controls.

b)      Managing invasive plants, insects, and pathogens.

c)      Managing arthropod-vectored diseases of humans, particularly those vectored by ticks or mosquitoes.
