I am a community ecologist who wants to understand how food webs 'work.' I am interested in interspecific interactions and how these interactions affect community structure. I seek to design and conduct field experiments testing both basic and applied ecological questions, in collaboration with researchers from a range of fields. I use large-scale geographic surveys in combination with manipulative experiments to document general patterns of plant-animal interactions and answer questions generated by these patterns.

I'm fascinated by how plants defend themselves against herbivores and pathogens despite being unable to move. I'm currently investigating how two invasive species feeding on eastern hemlock (hemlock woolly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale) interact with each other, focusing on their effect on resource availability and composition in hemlock foliage. This research will hopefully shed some light into potential hemlock resistance/tolerance mechanisms against these harmful pests.

I am interested in interactions between the hemlock woolly adelgid and elongate hemlock scale, and how these herbivores individually and jointly affect the health of eastern hemlock.

I am interested in the possibility that rare, naturally-occurring eastern hemlocks possess some degree of resistance to the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid. My work focusses on propogating cuttings from adelgid-resistant trees, then testing their adelgid resistance relative to cuttings from adelgid-susceptible eastern hemlocks.

I am interested in predator-prey interactions, and how the invasive chinese mantid overcomes prey toxicity when attacking and eating cardenolide-defended monarch caterpillars.
