Welcome to Sustainable Agriculture @ URI

| What is "Sustainable Agriculture"? |
|
Sustainable agriculture is both a noun and a verb. The noun describes farming systems that
are socially, economically, and ecologically viable. The verb refers to actively farming
in such a manner.
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to sustainable agriculture. Each farmer and farm and community
is different, so sustainability looks a bit different in each locale. Sustainable agriculture is conventional;
it is also organic. Sustainable agriculture happens on large commercial farms and small family farms.
In short, sustainable agriculturalists seek to have a healthy, consistent, self-perpetuating relationship with
their neighbors (both farming and non-farming), their business contacts, and their environment. Should any
one of these relationships disintegrate, the farmer cannot continue to farm; agriculture ceases to be sustainable. |

| Keeping Rhode Island Agriculture Sustainable |
|
The purpose of Sustainable Agriculture @ URI is to assist Rhode Island farmers in their ongoing
efforts at sustainability. We offer a variety of technical supports through on-site visits, sample
analysis, internet resources, and telephone communication. When we don't have the answer, we connect farmers
with the people/facilities that do. This website is a small part of meeting that goal -- allowing RI farmers to
quickly and easily find answers to common questions. |
