Seedcorn Maggot Fact Sheet

Seedcorn maggots bore into sprouting seeds, primarily affecting beans, peas, beets, corn, melons, cucumbers, potatoes, and cole crops.  Damage may manifest itself as failure to germinate or in frail plants with few unmarked leaves.  It is very unusual for seedcorn maggots to affect transplants or established plants.

Preventative measures are most successful.  Fully incorporate manure/green cover crops at least a month before planting.  Chemical controls include use of insecticides on the seed before planting or incorporation of granules on the row at planting.
